You've picked Shaw for your hardwood flooring—or you're close to choosing a line. I'm a quality compliance manager at a flooring company, and I review every installation before it reaches customers: roughly 200 projects a year. This is the exact checklist I walk through before signing off on any floor.

Also check the plank thickness. A 1/2" engineered product and a 3/4" solid plank get completely different transition strips. I've seen that mismatch delay a project by two weeks while the correct transitions shipped (not that I'm bitter about that particular Tuesday).
Quick check: unbox two planks from different cartons in the delivery. Lay them side by side. Are the lengths, widths, and thicknesses identical? They should be.
Step 2: Confirm the Acclimation Conditions
This is the step I'm most ruthless about, and also the one installers skip most often.
Hardwood needs to adjust to the room's temperature and humidity before installation. The commonly quoted guideline is 48–72 hours—or rather, the real requirement is that the moisture content of the wood stabilizes, which can take longer depending on your climate. I've signed off on a Phoenix install after 24 hours because the room humidity was already rock-bottom. I've also seen a Brooklyn apartment where the same product needed five days.
The non-negotiables:
- The cartons go into the actual room of installation—not a garage, not a hallway
- HVAC is running at the temperature the homeowner will actually use
- Cartons are opened so the wood can breathe
I rejected a project last year because the installer left Shaw cartons wrapped in plastic in the garage. "It's close enough," he said. The moisture meter said otherwise. The planks had acclimated to the garage—30% more humid than the house—and they would have expanded after installation, causing buckling. Take a moisture meter and test the subfloor before a single plank goes down. Here's the part people miss: test in multiple locations, especially near exterior walls and anywhere plumbing runs. Concrete is porous; moisture migrates in unpredictable patterns. One reading in the center of the room tells you almost nothing.
On a typical $18,000 hardwood project, a $200 moisture meter is the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy. Most flooring supply stores will lend you one if you're buying the floor from them (which, honestly, is a good reason to buy from a local supplier rather than an online-only retailer).
Step 4: Undercut Door Trim and Jambs
This is my "most people forget this step" step.
Door trim—the casings, jambs, and baseboards—has to be undercut so the new flooring slides cleanly beneath it. If this doesn't happen, you'll see gaps or feel the baseboards pinching the floor. The proper approach:
- Use an oscillating multi-tool or a jamb saw
- Cut at the height of the finished floor plus about 1/8" for expansion
- The trick: use a piece of your actual flooring as the cutting guide, with a scrap of underlayment placed on top. That way the cut height accounts for both the flooring and the underlayment
I can't count how many so-called professional installations I've seen where the trim got cut too low, then the installer tried to shim baseboards or, worse, recut trim after the floor was down. Undercut once, correctly, and your door trim sits flush over the new floor with no visible seam.
Coordinate this with any new doors you're ordering. I've seen doors delivered before the flooring height was finalized. Result: doors that won't swing over the new floor, or gaps under them that look wrong. Plan trim and flooring as one system.
Step 5: Plan the Expansion Gap and Transitions (and Their Cost)
Hardwood expands and contracts with humidity. That's not a flaw; it's physics. The installation has to accommodate it.
Shaw's installation instructions specify an expansion gap around the perimeter—typically 1/2" to 3/4" depending on product and room size. This gap lives under your baseboards, so you won't see it. The problem I see most: installers cutting the gap too tight in wide rooms, which later causes the floor to cup or buckle. In rooms wider than 25 feet, a transition strip should break up the span even if it's a purely aesthetic t-molding.

- Walk it in socks. Feel for any board that's raised, springy, or uneven. One buckled plank is a permanent trip hazard.
- Press hard on the butt joints. Movement means the locking mechanism isn't fully engaged. This is my #2 reason for rejection after acclimation issues.
- Look at the floor in natural light at a low angle. Hammer marks, mismatched planks, and excessive filler show up instantly.
- Check every transition. Each joint to an adjacent floor should have a clean, matching strip. Height differences need a reducer, not a mismatched threshold.
- Open and close every door that passes over the new floor.

Step 7: The Paint-and-Cleanup Reality Check
By this point, you've probably painted trim or walls around the project. And if you're like me, you have a paint spot or three on your favorite shirt.
Quick answer to the question everyone ends up asking: for latex paint, run cold water through the back of the stain (heat sets the paint) with dish soap, then blot gently. If it's already dried, rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer breaks down the latex. Test a hidden spot first.
But here's the flooring-related version: when you touch up the door trim and baseboards around your new Shaw floor, lay down a canvas drop cloth. Not a towel, not a pile of newspaper—a proper canvas cloth. Paint drips on a new hardwood floor are much harder to fix than paint on your t-shirt. A quote that skips underlayment and transitions isn't "cheaper"—it's just not finished yet. And if a mistake happens, the cost of redoing a section (plus your time) belongs in the equation. A transparent, itemized quote may look higher at first. It's usually the least expensive floor you'll actually end up with.
One more thing: even after you've made your choice and the installation is scheduled, you'll probably second-guess the color. What if that oak is too warm? What if you should have gone with a different product category? I've watched clients lose sleep over five-figure decisions like this. The doubt typically fades once the first carton opens and the planks are in the room. Until then, it's a normal part of the process.
Buying Shaw hardwood is a long-term decision.
